How Mediums Make a Connection with Spirit

By Susan Grayson, Psychic-Medium

Making a connection in mediumship is often described differently from one medium to another, depending on their spiritual beliefs, training, and personal experiences. While the language may vary, mediums and those receiving readings frequently describe the experience as deeply meaningful and profoundly real.

Many mediums begin by meditating, praying, practicing breathing exercises, or simply sitting quietly. The purpose is to calm the mind, reduce distractions, and become more receptive to the subtle impressions that may come from the spirit world.

As they settle into this focused state, mediums often describe entering an altered or heightened state of awareness. In this relaxed condition, they become more sensitive to thoughts, images, emotions, sensations, and other intuitive impressions that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The information they receive may come as mental pictures, words, feelings, memories, sounds, or even physical sensations. Using their intuition and experience, the medium interprets these impressions as communication from a spirit communicator.

Before attempting to establish a connection, many mediums intentionally invite only loving, helpful, and healing energies. They may silently ask for the presence of a specific loved one while setting the intention that only those working for the highest good are welcome.

Experienced mediums also emphasize the importance of sharing impressions as they receive them rather than analyzing or filtering the information. They strive to communicate exactly what Spirit presents, without embellishment or interpretation beyond what is necessary. Many believe that overthinking can interfere with the connection and that the ego has no place in mediumship. The focus should never be on the medium, but on the meaningful connection taking place between the sitter and their loved one in Spirit.

Every connection is unique. Some feel immediate and unmistakable, while others unfold gradually as trust and communication deepen. With practice, meditation, and experience, the connection between the physical world and the spirit world often becomes clearer and more recognizable.

At its heart, connecting with Spirit should be a sacred experience—one rooted in love, healing, and hope. For many people, it provides comfort in knowing that those they love continue to exist beyond the physical body and remain connected to them in meaningful ways.
